Ingredients
2 cups flour
½ teaspoon double acting baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup Crisco vegetable shortening
2/3 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
½ cup chocolate chips

Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Combine flour, sugar, baking powder,
baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly.
- Place the flour mixture into a mixer
bowl and turn the mixer on low. Cut the shortening into
the flour mixture a little bit at a time. Mix for 4–5
minutes until the mixture is crumbly.
- Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Pour buttermilk into a measuring cup
and add vanilla. Add the buttermilk mixture to the flour
mixture and mix just until the dough is moist. Do not overmix.
- Place dough onto floured surface and
knead gently. Form a square about 8” x 8” and
1 ½” thick. Cut the square into nine pieces
(three rows x three columns).
- Place scones onto cookie sheet and bake
for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool.
